Another Weekend Down...

Due to a number of factors, I think I'll jam together my last Kenpo, Stretch, and Ap Ripper routines together after work tonight to finish up what I'm counting as my third week of p90x (technically my 5th week). I'll be starting on the final 7 day transition out of phase one and in to phase two tomorrow.

The transition will introduce a new "Core Synergistic" routine, which I assume works the abs and back, and a more thorough upper body workout...combined with regular stretching or yoga every other day.

They call it a "recovery week". They also mention that if you have shitty conditioning, it's not likely to feel like a recovery week at all. Between hockey and a couple extra phase one weeks, I'm expecting to be well prepared.

Since the yoga portion seems to be a big chunk of this transition, I'm going to try the Yoga-X disc again. Earlier I was turned off by the difficulty of the moves, the repetitiveness, and my terrible flexibility...so I guess we'll see if any of my training has gone in to making this any more tolerable.

I have yoga blocks now too, which should help.

The past week I started to get bored and annoyed with the program for the first time since I've started. I even missed my first day--stuffy sinuses weren't really much of an excuse--but I slept for 14 hours in the middle of the work-week all the same.

Hopefully, the transition, new routines, and change of pace will lift my spirits back up and get me motivated for the next two months...I just have to figure out how I'm going to make it through the upcoming vacation in Vegas...

Hang in There, Baby

Well, I finally got over a big hump last week and am finally feeling like I'm in half decent shape. I have extra energy after hockey and my workouts...which is one of the reasons I'm going to change my schedule up a bit.

I felt comfortable taking Saturday and Sunday off this past weekend to visit Master P and his Special Lady Friend downtown. We went out Saturday and P had people over at his place for Superbowl Sunday, so I wasn't being very cautious about what I ate and drank. I just tried to keep portions smaller and avoided stuffing myself. Beer, guacamole, those Mexican things in corn husks...it was all quite delicious.

As an added bonus, the relaxed weekend resulted in my first scale reading that was closer to 154 than 156. It may have even helped my weight loss.

Maybe throwing up in the middle of the night after drinking (again)helped.

Originally, I had planned to move on to Phase 2 of P90X after my 5th week (they suggest moving on after four weeks). The 5th week just ended with yesterday's Kenpo-X workout...but I'm having second thoughts. I'm finally making noticeable progress and I no longer feel like a wrecked vessel every time I finish a workout.

When I do pull ups now, I can launch myself up with a quick burst of strength and keep going for 7-10+ controlled reps. When I first started, I was barely able to muscle myself up for 2 or 3. My form was disgusting. At times I could barely muster one single pull-up during the final stretch of some workouts. It was a humbling experience.

My form is improving a lot as I get stronger and I'd like to give Phase One another week. Six total. I just want the satisfaction of having one week where I feel like I pwn every workout, every day. Also, this is the weight loss phase, so it'll be one more week on a carb-restrictive diet. I am down to about 155-156 now, but I'd rather shed another pound or two before moving on.

If this trend holds, it may take over four months to complete the 90 day program. Maybe I'll double up workouts a day or two this week to speed things along.

After Kenpo, I went out to my local grocer and bought about 8 pounds of meat (obviously other stuff too) to get me through another high-protein week...no bread and pasta yet.

I've added a few new dietary supplements as well. I've been taking fish oil, Acai Pills, and a new flavor of Syntha-6. What can it hurt?

Grilled Turkey Sausage and Broccoli. The Hillshire Farms turkey sausage has easily won out as the Best Tasting Turkey Product I've tried. This is probably due to it having a slightly higher fat%.

I think I fucked up the steak portions by cooking them with green peppers at the same time on the foreman grill. From what I can gather, the steam coming off of the cooking peppers ended up steaming the meat. It ended up looking like boiled brains on the outside. Maybe that's just how round steak rolls? It was still edible--and more rare than it appears in the picture--but it was a little annoying...I guess when you try doing all this shit on a foreman, these things are bound to happen.

Kid-A didn't seem to mind eating the fatty pieces.

p90X...One Day - Ah ah ah! Two Days - Ah ah ah! 90 Days? - ha Ha HA!

Actually, for me it will probably take more than 100 days to complete the program due to lost hockey days and for discounting my pathetic first week. That means that each 7 day p90X week will take me about 8.5 days in real life.

Regardless, it has now been a month (four weeks, 28 days) since I first started moving my fat ass around more frequently and stopped eating delicious shit like Portillo's and tons of beer. In p90X time, I won't be completed with the third week of the program until this upcoming Sunday or Monday. Once that happens, my routine will undergo its first radical shift. Below is the first schedule that I've been following.

p90X Classic - Phase One - Weeks 1-3
Day 1 - Chest & Back / Ab Ripper X
Day 2 - Plyometrics
Day 3 - Shoulder & Arms / Ab Ripper X
Day 4 - Yoga X Hot Chick Yoga DVD (Crunch Yoga/Pilates)
Day 5 -Legs & Back / Ab Ripper X
Day 6 -Kenpo X
Day 7 - Rest or X-Stretch

For the final week before transitioning to Phase Two, they have a recovery/core-strengthening week which doesn't appear to have any significant weight training routines. Maybe this will help me shed some of my extra fatty fatty fat weight and will help keep my muscles from growing at such alarming, hulk-like rates.

p90X Classic - Phase One - Week 4 - Recovery (Vacation)
Day 1 - Yoga X Hot Chick Yoga DVD (Crunch Yoga/Pilates)
Day 2 - Core Synergistics (hoping this will help with lower back weakness)
Day 3 - Kenpo-X (low impact cardio)
Day 4 - X Stretch (pussy recovery time)
Day 5 - Core Synergistics
Day 6 - Yoga X Hot Chick Yoga DVD (more pussy recovery time)
Day 7 - Rest or X Stretch (even more pussy recovery time)

This damn program is so long, they waste a week of vacation just letting your body recover and getting it ready for some new stuff. Once Week Four is over, I get two new upper-body strength training routines to mix in. Unfortunately, it looks like they still want me to struggle with Ab Ripper X three times a week. My lower back is still keeping me from putting as much effort into the ab workout as I'd like.

Phase Two is also the beginning of a new diet plan that includes more carbs. The new plan will have a 40-40-20 Protein-Carbs-Fat ratio, as opposed to the carb restrictive 50-30-20 plan I've been working towards in Phase One. Exciting stuff coming up here!

p90X Classic - Phase Two - Weeks 5-7
Day 1 - Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps / Ab Ripper X
Day 2 - Plyometrics
Day 3 - Back & Biceps / Ab Ripper X
Day 4 - Yoga X Hot Chick Yoga DVD
Day 5 - Legs & Back / Ab Ripper X
Day 6 - Kenpo-X
Day 7 - Rest or X Stretch

Some Good News and Some Bad News

Well, the good news is that I'm getting stronger. I managed about 7 declined push ups in the middle of yesterday's Chest & Back routine (I can remember struggling with 3 at the beginning). Even the pull ups and "diamond push ups" from yesterday are getting more tolerable. I haven't had to duck out early from any routines for quite a while now (with the exception of excluding parts of Ab Ripper-X), so I think I'm getting over the initial difficulty of getting my body used to working out...although my left elbow has been cracking and feels kind of iffy during the overhand pull ups.

The bad news is that I'm back at 159 lbs. I'm really not sure how this is possible unless I have an extremely slow metabolism that is refusing to kick it in to high gear. I don't think this weight stagnation can be directly attributed to muscle gain at this point. Here's a goal chart of hitting 145lbs by my upcoming Vegas trip 2/19...it's not looking very probable any more. (I went back and retroactively added past weight milestones based on entries)

Most advice is for males to operate on no less than 1,800 calories per day for a sedentary lifestyle. I've been doing 1200-1400 calories a day comfortably, though, and I don't go for periods of feeling hungry or starving--which is what they warn against. I followed the advice that by pacing my meals out roughly 3-4 hours apart throughout the day I'd increase my metabolism and burn calories with greater ease. That doesn't seem to be happening, though.

There is the potential that I'm not eating enough to force my metabolism to increase, but my fear of gaining even more weight is too great to attempt an experiment now. Additionally, my energy level has been fine throughout the workouts and my general energy level has been high, which should mean that my body has been receiving enough fuel/food.

I have been eating soon before I go to sleep, though, so I'm going to make a concerted effort to avoid eating within 3 hours of bed to see if that makes a difference. My favorite snacks of the day are always my last.

Sigh...

This was the first time I ate asparagus on this diet. It's hard to describe just how amazing this burger, cheese, mustard, asparagus, and soy sauce combo tasted.

Chicken breasts, light swiss, grilled peppers.

My new dumbbells (awesome upgrade), push up bars, and purple yoga blocks that help me perform difficult stretches that require touching the floor in strange positions.

Marvel at the beauty and simplicity of the modern pull up bar. No need for drilling, it's all about gravity and weight distribution.

Simple Maths

I've been avoiding buying a set up dumbbells because they're so damn expensive. All types of lifting weights are priced, roughly, at $1 per pound. That is fucking insane and stupid. I assume that it has a lot to do with transportation expense.

What I have been intending to buy are the following dumbbell weights:

10 lbs x 2
20 lbs x 2
30 lbs x 2

It's a pain in the ass to change the weight on adjustable dumbbells in the middle of a routine. Additionally, the cement weights that I have at home are so large that they inhibit my range of motion and prevent me working on improving my form on several exercises. Also, I'm short a couple 10 lbs plates from what I would need to increase weight on the shitty dumbbells I'm using now.

If I bought six solid, one piece, hex barbells in the weights above from Walmart, it would cost $110. That's a lot of money for a cheap bastard like me and I don't want to have to worry about selling those or moving to a new location with that weight.

So I did a little research...

  • Walmart accepts returns within 90 days of a purchase for anything other than entertainment media and some tech products.
  • The P90X program lasts 90 days

...not only that, but according to their website, you don't even need a receipt to return something for store credit! God I love Walmart...the only downside I see here is that I'll have to keep the UPC stuck on.

Disaster Averted

I experienced a mild freak out on Tuesday while I was reformatting my primary hard drive and updating my computer to Windows 7 (Ultimate 64). I knew I had a long wait ahead of me, so I took a nap once it started installing. I set my alarm for 9:30pm and planned on waking up and doing the Shoulders and Arms routine before it got too late.

All of my music, pictures, videos, and p90x information was on an internal 1 terabyte storage drive, which shouldn't have been affected by the new install. The primary drive would be reformatted and would contain all OS and Software files. I figured that I would be able to just hop onto my new version of windows and start up a video on my backup drive without issue. I've done this kind of thing before.

Bill Gates threw me a curve ball, though, and upon finalizing the installation, my hard drive was invisible. I couldn't find about 800 gigabytes of media that I count on to keep me happy and sane every day of my life...and that included the p90x videos. After cracking open my computer case, rewiring SATA cables, fucking with my system BIOS, fearing that I accidentally reformatted the wrong hard drive, and generally freaking out, I learned that I simply needed to activate the drive and assign it a letter in Windows 7.

What in the fuck is the point of making people do that? Previous versions of Windows bring in extra hard drives without any extra effort. Fuck you Bill Gates. Fuck you straight to hell.

On the plus side, I'm not the only one boosting performance. While messing with the BIOS I saw an option to overclock my dual core AMD 2.6 ghz cpu and got it close to 2.9 ghz. The recommended resolution for my games got bumped up and I haven't had any stability issues. Score one for experimenting.

All was well once I finally got my hard drive to show up, and I was able to complete the disc by about 12:30am.

As of today, I will have been following Phase 1 of p90x for 3 weeks (even though I don't really count that first week since I couldn't finish any of the routines). This might be surprising to some people since following some stupid workout DVD program sounds monotonous, annoying, and easy to quit. I'll try to explain why it's working.

A) I devoted myself to honestly recapping my progress from day 1. The fear of public failure is a strong motivator.

B) The workout routine is hard and you only do each workout once per week. Because of this, I still haven't perfected my form on all of the exercises, so it continues to be a challenge just to get in line with the people demonstrating the moves. I have yet to memorize each routine. Repetitive boredom has yet to set in.

C) I'm still getting sore after workouts, which means I'm still doing difficult, strenuous exercise that will produce results. If these routines didn't feel like a lot of work, I wouldn't be interested in continuing.

D) I've remained injury free. My wrists would be holding me back if I didn't buy the pushup bars. The lack of other injuries may be attributable to the fact that each routine starts with a warm up.

E) I have devoted myself to following a strict food plan and haven't eaten anything other than salad from a fast food joint. Also, cutting out drinking.

E) Tony Horton, the instructor, is not nearly as much of a prickish, intolerable asshole as he could be. You can tell that he really believes in the program and his nearly psychotic love of pushing the limits of exercise is both humorous and infectious. They even do occasional fun stuff like a "Groucho Marx" exercise/walk.

Here are some classic Tony Horton lines from the videos.

"Look at his triceps, do you see those? Jimmy, get in here and get a shot of those tri's. Diamonds of gold my friend!"

"Do your best and...?"
"Forget the rest."

"Like a pteradactyl backing out of trouble. Cawwwwwww."

"Tip of the day: Don't smash your face. Let someone else do that to you."

"Just keep showin up, keep showing up, keep pressing play, keep pressing play."

"Now if you need a break while we keep going, take it. Just don't go off running into the kitchen to grab yourself a donut. Keep moving."

"I'm going to be on the cover of Downward Dog magazine."

"Ab ripper X....I hate it, but I love it!"

"That's the face...BRING IT!...of a girl who's working hard."

So, all in all it has gone pretty well. I expected that I'd want to shoot a hole in my skull by now, but things have been going smoothly.

I weighed in at 155 lbs the last two mornings (162 lbs start), so it looks like I'm starting to hit that sweet spot where fat starts melting off at alarming rates. I'm expecting to see a good chunk of my excess fat weight to be shed over the next 2 weeks. I'm also developing more width (along with some definition) in my biceps than I've ever seen before. Maybe you'll get treated to some sexy bicep flexing pictures along with the standard fare in another week.

Also, I want an iPad with 3g, so I'd like to encourage the early adopters to beat the shit out of their new toys so I can buy one refurbished.

Yet Another Weekend Gone

And now it just a Monday....'Round Midnight

After watching the travesty that was Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings' 28-31 loss on Sunday night, it was a difficult thing to drive all the way back home from downtown Chicago just to force myself to do some exercise. I was scheduled to start my second "real" full week of P90X. In a display of raw anger and frustration, I nearly ran some poor woman in a minivan off the road for refusing to surrender the left lane to me as I came speeding up behind her. It was her own damn fault for being on the road while angry-LB was driving. Especially on the lawless Chicagoland highways.

I was in a bad mood, but it no longer mattered that Brett Farve threw a last second interception at the end of regulation. It didn't matter that three calls in overtime, if called in favor of the Vikings, would not have been overturned by replay. It just so happened that all calls went in favor of the Saints. All of them...along with a completely horseshit pass interference call. The fact that I had to listen to Troy Aikman flapping his stupid bitch face for three hours was just more shit icing on a shitty shitty shit cake. The only thing that mattered on my drive home was preparing myself to get back to work. X-Style!

Ugh.

I was due for a session of Chest/Back, followed by "Ab-ripper X". I handled the upper body stuff fairly well, but I think I'm going to find a replacement workout for the ab disc. My lower back doesn't seem to be getting strong enough, quickly enough to handle the 300 some-odd moves that are covered in those 15 nonstop minutes. I just end up writhing around on the floor in pain clutching my back after the first 10 minutes.

It's doubly painful because after an hour of push-ups, pull-ups, and free-weight moves, it's hard to use my arms to do something as simple as leaning backward to support the weight of my torso. Which is needed to perform moves like "bicycle", the 'ol "In Out", and even "crunchy frog". Fuck, by the time I went to bed, it was hard just to find the strength to roll my body over.

I had a few low calorie/carb Budweiser Selects during the game on Sunday, but I didn't use it as an excuse. I used all the damn willpower I could muster up and I completed the day's activities.

The day before, Saturday, I went downtown to hang out with Master P. We drank a little Whiskey, Guinness, and Buds along with some spicy-crunchy-greasy chicken wings. You can take your guess as to which one of those, or which combination, woke me up in the middle of the night so I could throw it all back up into the porcelain coffer. It was my first real foray back into relaxing with a little junk food and alcohol, and my body made it clear that I was no longer in junk food shape.

Maybe I should start drinking red wine. It might create a sort of balance between my extremes of drunkenness and sobriety...and it's good for the heart, right?

Plyometrics kicked my ass today, and I'm still sore from yesterday's workout, but nothing compares to the sting of that terrible Vikings loss. How the fuck could they fumble so many times!?

Shrimp (shelled/deveined by my hand), cooked in white wine, soy sauce, & pepper broth, dipped in a simple Sweet n Sour/Hot Mustard Sauce.

Sexy Photo Time - Two Weeks

The pictures from two week ago are on the left in each image. Today's are on the right.

162 lbs vs 159 lbs + strength training.

Thursday? What the hell..

Marty McFly: [being chased by Libyan terrorists]
"Let's see if you bastards can do 90."

I try to update this awesome blog at least every other day, so I'm not really sure where time went this week. Anyway, I'm back.

I've continued soldiering on. So far, I've successfully completed the full hour of the DVD routines for this week, with the exception of Plyometrics (too hard/noisy) and Yoga-X (annoyingly repetitive). In fact, I decided to completely abandon p90x's shitty yoga disc after last night. I switched to another yoga DVD I had downloaded while I was partway through the p90x disc. Here are my main problems with the "yoga-x" routine.
  • It lasts 1.5 hours
  • It features doing the "Downward Facing Dog" pose (see image below) a maddening number of times in the first 20-30 minutes. It's not hard or challenging, I just don't need to stretch out my calves 50 fucking times in one sitting.
  • So many times, in fact, that my sensitive right wrist starting hurting like a motherfucker any time we had to do a transition to/from this pose.
  • The instructor, Tony Horton, moves from pose to pose so quickly I don't have time to get set in a good stretch or lunge, even when I know what move is coming.
  • It seems as though they are trying to adapt yoga techniques into a routine that burns a certain number of calories and strains the muscles enough that people feel worn out after finishing. That means a shitload of mind-numbing repetition and a really long, boring routine.

I will not be giving the p90x version another shot. From now on, I'll just substitute/rotate through some of the other yoga DVD's I've downloaded on the days that I should be doing yoga-x. I don't plan on doing more than one hour of yoga in any sitting, either. I'm really turned off to Yoga after my initial experiences within this program.

Why are you making me hate yoga, Tony Horton? What the fuck?

I've been consistently consuming about 1250-1450 calories a day and haven't had a drink in two weeks. I'm thinking that it may be time to work a little whiskey (0 carbs) in on the weekends to help maintain my sanity. It's not like me to go on bitching about something like yoga.

Anyway, it looks like my restrictive eating habits and high protein intake are finally translating into a little weight loss. I didn't breach the 160 lbs line on the scale for the last two days, at varying times during each day, so it looks like I'm down about 3-4 lbs in two weeks. Yeehaw!

I think I made a commitment to taking progress photos every two weeks, and today is the day. I'll probably throw something up tonight.

Another Weekend Down

Day 12 and I'm still going strong. Hockey has gotten in the way of the P90X scheduled routines...or maybe the routines are getting in the way of hockey. Regardless, P90X allows one day of rest/stretching each week, but it always comes at the same time at the end of each week. In order to maintain 6 days of exercise a week, I've started taking my "rest days" the day before my games to avoid next-day soreness. Then I count hockey as an exercise separate from the program and continue with the normal p90x schedule the following day.

I finished the first abbreviated week of the program (only going through 50-75% of each routine), so now I'm trying to complete the full hour of each routine this week. I made it all the way through the shoulder & back disc, which was a fucking trial, but I was unable to complete the plyometrics disc the next day. Aside from being an exhausting routine, I think I'm probably irritating my neighbors with all of the jumping and shit involved with that disc. Even though I'm on the ground floor, I have hardwood floors which, I'm sure, are making noise and mild quaking in the three apartments surrounding me.

My landings are not quite as "cat-like" as Tony Horton has been asking for. Not yet, anyway. I'm thinking about buying a thick gym mat from the Sports Authority to help dissipate the sound/shock waves, but I'll worry about that next week. I also think that I need some 20 and 30 lb dumbbells for the shoulder and arm routines, but I'm hoping I can find something to fit he bill on craigslist or from Play It Again Sports.

Since I have a hockey game tonight, I took a rest day yesterday. Instead of just resting, though, I decided to download some introductory Yoga DVD's that I might be able to use on my downtime or on off days. I'm hoping that it will help build my balance for the rather intense (impossible) Yoga-X that is offered as a part of the P90X routine. Also, my lower back has been stiffening up from all of this shit I've been subjecting myself to and I was hoping some Yoga stretches might help. I ended up finding a nice little 45 minute routine that was tough enough to break a sweat, but wasn't beyond my rudimentary yoga strength and flexibility. The downside is that it's clearly intended for young women and focuses a lot on shaping and toning the ass. The upside is that it has lots of attractive young women demonstrating. Below is a screenshot.

I was telling my older brother Mezzo about the delicious Syntha-6 shakes that I started taking. He was interested in starting to incorporate a shake into his daily routine after hearing about how tasty I thought they were, so he checked with a weight-lifting nutrition freak he knew from BJJ. I listened in on the chat. His friend's comments resembled the mad ravings of a paranoid schizophrenic, as one might expect from someone who has spent many hours debating carb-protein ratios with muscle-bound freaks whose rational minds have been clouded from ingesting large quantities of experimental nutritional supplements for their entire adult lives.

He basically advised him against drinking soymilk, or ingesting any type of soy product in any form. He recommended a protein shake that tastes like shit (by his own admission). He advised never ingesting dairy of any kind. He suggested that foods advertising that they have healthy benefits were often the worst possible things for you. He actually said, "Don't get me started on corn."

My argument in favor of Syntha-6 can easily be summed up by this advertisement that I came across in a pirated version of Maxim Magazine that I found.

I fucking love technology. I didn't realize people put PDF's of magazines up for downoad online. My iPod didn't have that functionality built in, but I was able to find a cracked app that took care of it, so now I can carry periodicals along with me in my pocket!

I Drink Your Milkshake

If you haven't seen the movie "There Will be Blood" you should.

I am beat two days after doing "Kenpo-X", a part of the p90x series. Basically, you spend an hour kicking and punching the air while trying to look like Bruce Lee. I almost completed the entire workout for the first time (it's more of a cardio program) but, sadly, just pawing at the air still makes my poor body ache.

I played the first hockey game of the season yesterday which tired the hell out of me even more than the Kenpo. I feel much better on the ice compared to last season, though, and my slap shot and passes are already a little more crisp. I didn't even get nauseous for the first time on the ice since I've started playing again. It's just hard to say whether it's from not smoking, not drinking, or recent exercise. Regardless, yay!

After the game, it felt like every muscle in my back was sore. My love handles jiggled with pain. I had just received my shipment of 3 lbs of a powdered protein shake called Syntha-6 and a couple boxes of Clif's Builder Bars (which I intend to use as a breakfast substitute).

I pre-made a shake out of soy milk and powder so I could have it ready to chug when I got home. It was fucking delicious. It tasted like a wonderful, rejuvenating desert. I bought the Chocolate and Peanut Butter flavor which mixed perfectly with the original flavor soy milk. I forgot how much I love soy milk. I would happily drink soy instead of water every day for the rest of my life...if doing that somehow made sense.

I also appreciate the fact that the maker of this powdered supplement, BSN, realizes that it's bad marketing to have a bunch of pictures of guys with freakish, bulging muscles staring back at you when you visit their website. They have chosen a much wiser method. Maybe they learned a thing or two from the ring girls after they started sponsering UFC athletes and fights.

I decided to try out protein supplements for a couple reasons.

First, I've never tried adding anything weird to my diet during exercise other than pure creatine (doing so gave me stretch marks on my shoulder due to rapid growth) and that was back in high school when I would only do bench presses and curls. I'm not really sure how much of a difference a more well-rounded kind of supplement will make, so I might as well give it a shot.

Second, it's an easy way to take in a lot of easily processed protein. It's kind of a pain in the ass to eat 12 oz of meat every day and this should cut some of that out of my diet. Plus, it's supposed to be good for recovery and to help build lean muscle. It's fairly high in calories, though, so I'm taking half of the recommended dosage. I do not want to be fat and muscular, which is what I assume would happen if you drank the hell out of this shit.

It's so damn tasty, it's hard not to want to drink the hell out of it.
